About Us

The Beacon Network is a unique educational model within Denver Public Schools (DPS). We are part of an Innovation Management Organization that allows for an Executive Principal to oversee the two schools currently in the network — Kepner Beacon Middle School (KBMS) and Grant Beacon Middle School (GBMS). The Beacon Network has the potential for future growth and may add more schools.

Schools that are granted Innovation status by DPS have more autonomy to develop practices that better meet the needs of individual students. As Innovation schools, Beacon schools have implemented:

  • A more rigorous college preparatory curriculum.
  • Blended learning with technology-based instruction, applications and assessments.
  • A system for frequent analysis of student data.
  • Research-based interventions that result in high growth and achievement.
  • Increased instructional time.
  • Reduced class sizes for reading, writing and math.
  • Professional development for teachers to assist them in meeting the needs of our diverse learners.

Achieve, Lead and Grow Together

Our Mission

Beacon schools are committed to the high achievement and growth of every student. Beacon schools provide a college preparatory program of study that sets high expectations and requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Through the collaborative work of students, staff, families and community partners, Beacon schools will bring together diverse communities and prepare students with the academic knowledge and 21st century leadership skills necessary for college and career success.

Our Vision

Beacon school students will be among the highest in academic growth in the state, will be well-rounded in their interests and abilities, and will be recognized in the community for outstanding character.

Our Cornerstones of Learning

Our four cornerstones were developed by teacher and staff to create curriculum to meet students at their individual needs building a personalized learning enviroment.

Blended Learning – Utilizing differentiated one to one and in-house built online lessons students can move at their own pace.

Character Development – By measuring five traits students are given feedback on their overall mental and moral development.

Extended Day Opportunities – Each quarter students signup for two end of day enrichment opportunities.

Blended Learning pairs classroom instructional time with technology resulting in a personalized learning plan for each student that is tailored to his or her academic needs. Blended Learning also provides students with the opportunity to have a voice and a choice in what they learn and how to learn. Our system allows teachers to frequently measure student growth and achievement.

When our students move on to high school, they are equipped with character traits that will serve them throughout their lives. Character traits are discussed in student advisory classes and students are scored on their ability to practice them. Those exemplifying excellent character traits are recognized in class and at weekly celebrations and Beacon character traits are:

Leadership: Students nurture leadership abilities in themselves and others to make an equitable impact on their community.

Perseverance: Students demonstrate the ability to establish goals and work in pursuit of overcoming challenges, even after experiencing difficulty or failure.

Integrity: Students display an intrinsic motivation to be honest and fair in their consideration and regard for self, others and community.

Curiosity: Students exemplify the desire to learn and show initiative to explore new things.

Kindness: Students exhibit friendliness, empathy, generosity, and consideration.

Beacon students attend school approximately five additional hours or more per week. This allows time for additional academic instruction, advanced classes, interventions for students who need additional support, and enrichment programs.
